Protest on Women's Day
Thousands demonstrate in Israel against the government
Thousands of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities on Saturday evening for the release of hostages held by Hamas and against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The demonstration by the hostage families in the center of Tel Aviv was held to mark International Women's Day, which had been celebrated worldwide the day before.
Under the slogan "19 women in Hamas violence", relatives of female hostages and victims of Hamas violence and a young woman who was released in November spoke to the participants of the rally. A few hundred meters away, several thousand people demonstrated against the Netanyahu government. Near the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense, police prevented them from blocking a city highway, Israeli media reported.
Critics accuse government of not being prepared
The authorities arrested 16 demonstrators. Opponents of the government accuse Netanyahu of pursuing a misguided policy that only serves his own interests. This led to the country being unprepared when the Islamist Hamas and other extremist groups attacked southern Israel on October 7. The terrorists killed 1,200 people and abducted another 250 as hostages. Israel responded with massive air strikes and a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Hundreds of people demonstrated in front of the residence of President Yitzhak Herzog in Jerusalem. They also demanded freedom for the hostages. In Caesarea near Tel Aviv, a large crowd marched in front of a private villa belonging to Netanyahu. One of the speakers, a former general, said in reference to the head of government: "Your policy is aimed at only one thing: remaining in power at all costs, and the war serves your purposes perfectly."
134 hostages still held by Hamas
Just over 100 hostages were released last November in an exchange for Palestinians in Israeli prisons. The conditions under which Hamas is holding the abducted people in the Gaza Strip are described as horrendous. According to Israeli estimates, 134 hostages, including 19 women, are still being held by the terrorists. However, according to Israeli sources, only around 100 of the hostages are still alive. Indirect negotiations on a temporary ceasefire and a further release of hostages are currently at an impasse.
