Another missing person
5 Swiss people die on ski tour around Tête Blanche
On Sunday evening, five missing ski tourers were found dead in Switzerland (see video above). Another ski tourer is still missing. The group had set off from Zermatt on Saturday morning and were on their way to the Tête Blanche mountain, according to the Valais cantonal police.
The mountain is around 3706 meters high and is located on the border between Switzerland and Italy in the Valais Alps. At the time of the tour, the weather conditions were poor, which also made it difficult for the rescue teams to operate. They were alerted by a member of the group at around 17:19 on Saturday. The subsequent localization was still successful. However, the storm on the southern side of the Alps and the risk of avalanches prevented the helicopter and rescue teams from approaching the area.
Search temporarily called off
Five experienced rescue teams therefore attempted to reach the ski tourers by land from Zermatt. However, due to the very poor weather conditions and the risk of avalanches, the search was called off again at an altitude of more than 3000 meters.
On Sunday, reinforcements arrived, including the army air force, various special units of the cantonal police, technical and telecommunications experts. At around 9.20 pm, however, the Swiss men, aged between 21 and 58, could only be found dead.
Here you can see a tweet from the Valais police from Monday morning.
Cause of death unclear
It is not yet clear whether the alpinists froze to death - the temperatures were extremely low at the time of their tour - or died in an avalanche. The identification of the victims was also not yet complete on Monday morning. It is known that five people are part of a family from Valais and that another Swiss national comes from the city of Fribourg.
One ski tourer is still missing. The search for him is continuing, as the Valais cantonal police announced on Monday.
