Massive rockfall
Shore road on Lake Garda open again from Thursday
Clearance work began on Monday following a massive rockfall on Lake Garda. As reported, a 20 cubic meter rock between Riva del Garda and Limone broke loose on Friday evening. The lakeside road is expected to be open to traffic again from Thursday.
The western shore road on Lake Garda in Italy is currently impaired. On Friday evening, large chunks of rock fell onto the road along the lake. Some cars parked at the side of the road were damaged. As there were no people in the area at the time of the incident, no one was injured. An adjacent house was evacuated as a precaution.
Here you can see photos of the rockslide last weekend.
Local inspection by helicopter
Civil protection carried out a local inspection by helicopter on Saturday. As a result, the road was temporarily closed for safety reasons. A specialist company is now responsible for blasting the rock and clearing the slope and roadway. Additional boat connections have been set up so that people can get to Limone by Thursday.
Alternating between frost and thaw
Landslides are not uncommon in the area around Lake Garda after heavy rainfall. Geologists observe the rock movements with the help of technical instruments. The "Gardesana occidentale" has had to be closed repeatedly in recent months after rockfalls, once in mid-December and another time at the beginning of January (see video above). The alternation between frost and thaw as well as the heavy rainfall of recent weeks is said to have washed the rocks free.
