Braunöder in Italy
“A return to Austria wouldn’t be a disaster”
Matthias Braunöder has been struggling for playing minutes since his loan from Austria to second division side Como. The football-mad city is dreaming of promotion to Serie A. The captain is in demand with Austria's U21s in the European Championship qualifier against Cyprus, where a win is a must.
After five weeks in a hotel including an Airbnb stay, he was finally allowed to move into his own apartment. "I've been to the city several times, I live very centrally. There's a lot of pasta and fish in the restaurants, but I'm a big fan of that anyway," winks Matthias Braunöder. He moved from Austria to Como in Serie B on loan at the end of January, with the Italians securing a purchase option in the summer. In the country of the current European champions, however, the blonde has not even been in the starting eleven and has only played 71 minutes in four games. Braunöder came on at the break in a bitter 2-1 defeat against Cremonese.
"It was clear to me that I wouldn't arrive here and play every game straight away. We have a very good squad. I have to get to know a new country and a new culture, and I've had no preparation. But I'm getting better and better week by week and hope to get a chance from the start."
"A huge opportunity"
The title fight is fierce, with Como currently in fourth place, four points behind the direct promotion place, and Pisa awaits on Saturday. "Four or five teams have a lot of quality, but every game is a real battle, nothing is given to you." However, coach Cesc Fabregas' squad want to give their fans the gift of promotion to Serie A. "The city is very crazy about soccer, everyone wants promotion. If it works out and Como take up the option to buy from me, that would be ideal. I see it as a huge opportunity and have shown that I can be an asset. But I'm not putting myself under pressure. If it doesn't work out, I'll be back at Austria. A return wouldn't be a disaster for me either."
With Austria's U21s, the captain is immediately challenged in the European Championship qualifiers, in the first competitive match of the year (March 26) only a win against Cyprus counts.
