Fast-moving business
Not everyone is on the coaching merry-go-round
In the fast-paced lower division of soccer, clubs and coaches are increasingly parting ways. However, examples show that things can be done differently.
It was only on Sunday that Ernst Lottermoser officially announced that he would be stepping down as coach of Westliga club St. Johann at the end of the season. The man from Pongau will then have spent nine years (eight of which as coach of the fighting team) at the club from the Western League. A collaboration that is almost a little atypical for the fast-moving business in Salzburg's lower division. In addition to all the players, the coaching carousel is also constantly in motion. They move from club to club and are often passed around the province year after year. Clubs such as Bischofshofen and Puch (eleven coaches since summer 2016) regularly change their coaches for various reasons.
Hofer and Hof
In addition to St. Johann, Western League leaders Austria Salzburg, who have been relying on Christian Schaider as coach since December 2017 and are now flirting with the 2nd division, prove that things can be done differently. Or the collaboration between Thomas Hofer and Anif. The 54-year-old won several titles in two terms (six-and-a-half and five years). Now he is about to leave his mark on another era at Salzburgligigist Kuchl.
Hof is also focusing on continuity. They are trying to keep (former) players at the club. The aim is to strengthen the club for the future. "We pay for their coaching training, for example," says chairman Peter Lissy. But there are no obstacles in anyone's way. Former court kicker and "co" Michael Berktold has been working with Oliver Glasner for a long time. The 43-year-old sports scientist is currently working for Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
