Drama based on "Star Wars"
The tragic fate of “Anakin” Jake Lloyd
As the character of little Anakin Skywalker, Jake Lloyd became world-famous at the age of just nine and delighted millions of "Star Wars" fans in "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace". Since a psychotic break last year, the now 35-year-old, who has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, has been in a facility for the mentally ill.
Lloyd's mother Lisa Lloyd revealed in an interview with "Scripps News" that her son has been in the hospital for about ten months and has struggled with mental illness since high school.
Signs of the disorder
Lisa Lloyd described how Jake had problems with reality in high school and spoke of "different realities".
She added that one day she asked him if he had done his homework and he told her, "I don't even know if I have to do it. I don't know what reality I'm in."
He later believed that he would see people with "black eyes" staring at him, and that he would sometimes have conversations with Daily Show host Jon Stewart through his television screen.
Diagnosis and treatment
After several visits to the doctor, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. However, the medication he was prescribed did not always help. In 2015, he suffered a severe breakdown, which led to a police chase.
Hope for recovery
Lloyd is currently undergoing 18 months of therapy in a facility for the mentally ill and is making good progress, according to his mother. "He's doing much better than I expected," she said. "He's becoming a bit more social."
Jake remains a "Star Wars" fan
Despite his difficult experiences, Jake is still a fan of the "Star Wars" series. "He loves all the new 'Star Wars' movies," says his mother. "People think Jake hates 'Star Wars'. He loves it."
