No lagoon! Buberlemoos to become a natural monument
The 2.5-hectare Buberlemoos in Pörtschach is one of the last moors on Lake Wörthersee. Real estate sharks want to build a grandiose lagoon on this area, which would bring in a lot of money. However, an expert opinion from the state says the opposite: The municipality should turn the biotope into a natural monument as a home for rare animals and plants.
A nature conservation report by the state has set the course for turning the unique Buberlemoos in Pörtschach into a natural monument. The state thus passed the ball back to the municipality, which must now decide on the matter in the municipal council. The almost 2.5-hectare reed belt is home to fish, waterfowl, birds of prey, bats and much more. However, real estate developers have wanted to build a luxury lagoon on this site for decades. Currently, 17 plots of land are being considered, which would be worth between 70 and 100 million euros. Naturally, this is a major attraction for many.
But nature has to win. "The Buberlemoos and its unique animals and plants have been strictly protected at EU and state level for decades. Every time we have to make an outcry to stop the diggers and mowers," says Gabi Hadl from the Green Party. "Moss and soil protection are the order of the day. With the Buberlemoos, we can generate more momentum for tourism and quality of life in Pörtschach." FP municipal councillor Florian Pacher is also fighting for nature. "People have already destroyed a lot in the protected area."
Dredging work was carried out in the biotope again in January. "According to the expert opinion, a willow or black alder stand with the character of a swamp forest with a typical soil water balance should develop right there," says Florian Pacher. "But the condition is still so good that the habitat could be restored and the original state achieved." In the municipal council vote on April 24, the VP has the majority. "The Buberlemoos has been protected for years by the defined settlement boundary. Not all the facts are in yet," says VP Mayor Silvia Häusl-Benz.
