Around three quarters of all Austrians are planning to celebrate Easter this year. Almost as many (74 percent) also want to buy Easter presents for their loved ones and spend around 50 euros on them. A total of around 260 million euros will be spent on the festivities, as announced by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ) on Tuesday.

This was based on a survey conducted by KMU Forschung Austria on behalf of the WKÖ's retail division. The majority - seven out of ten respondents - intend to keep their budget roughly the same as in previous years.

68% will go for the sweet classics
15% want to dig deeper into their pockets this time, 17% will spend less money on gifts. The most popular gifts this year are once again sweets such as chocolate bunnies or eggs and chocolates: 68% will go for these classics. They are followed by (dyed) Easter eggs and toys. Cash, flowers and potted plants are also among the most popular gifts.

67 million Easter eggs and 23 million chocolate bunnies will be given away
According to the survey, a total of around 67 million Easter eggs and 23 million chocolate bunnies will be given as gifts this year. The majority of purchases will be made in bricks-and-mortar stores: 89% said they would buy their gifts there. A quarter said they also buy one or two gifts online.

Shared Easter snacks are still popular
Three quarters of Austrians prefer to celebrate the holiday with an Easter snack or Easter meal together.

Popular traditions include egg pecking (45 percent) and decorating an Easter bush (40 percent), searching for Easter eggs (39 percent) and dyeing Easter eggs together (34 percent).
