BMW switches on “Turbo” in Austria
BMW's engine plant in Steyr is the largest in the Group. Another €1 billion will be invested by 2030 to make it a center for high-performance electric drives. But the company is also focusing on growth in petrol and diesel. BMW is already the third-largest manufacturer in our country in terms of sales.
The 4700 employees at the Steyr plant assembled more than 1.2 million engines last year, 8% more than before. This resulted in 200 additional jobs and a record turnover of €4.2 billion. And there was growth in both petrol engines (accounting for 3/4 of production) and diesel engines. "We are also constantly developing them further. For the global market, and because there will be a review of the EU decision in 2026, which actually provides for a ban on new combustion engine registrations from 2035," says plant boss Klaus von Moltke. The fact that BMW is one of the few manufacturers to rely on all drive technologies is now proving its worth. Nevertheless, the turbo is being switched on for e-mobility: Last year, €361 million was invested in Steyr, i.e. one million a day. By 2030, a total of one billion euros is to be invested in expanding the plant into a competence center for high-performance e-drives. "This is up to 40% more efficient than now, which enables longer ranges or smaller batteries," explains von Moltke. Production of the new super motors will start in fall 2025, when they will be installed in a generation of vehicles developed entirely for e-mobility. "In addition, the six models have a new digital concept and are 100% recyclable." From 2030, 50% of all BMWs are expected to have electric motors, which means that half of the development team in Steyr will be working on this technology instead of a third now.
This is going down well with customers. Last year, 72% more all-electric BMWs and Minis were sold. "That made us number 2 after Tesla, and even number 1 in the last few months," beams Christian Morawa, Head of BMW Austria. The Munich-based company is also the leader in the premium market and even the third-largest manufacturer overall. "We have gained market share. The latest model range and our technological openness are proving their worth." One example is the upcoming 5 Series Touring, which will be offered in five variants (petrol, diesel, each also as a hybrid, electric motor). Overall, BMW is one of our largest companies with a turnover of almost €9 billion and 5200 employees. Since its foundation, the Group has invested €8.8 billion in Austria.
