Selena Gomez regrets how hard she used to be on herself.

In the documentary "My Mind and Me", fans can take a candid look into the actress's life.

The movie was filmed over six years and shows not only how the singer struggles with her self-confidence, but also how she has to cope with her bipolar disorder and burnout.

"It's getting me down"
At a "SXSW" panel discussion, Selena was asked whether her documentary had changed the way she dealt with herself.

She replied: "It makes me sick when I hear the things I said about myself at the beginning. It gets me down. But I think everyone can relate to that feeling. It's important to speak kindly to yourself, but I don't think I really understood that [at the beginning of the movie]."

The "Only Murders in the Building" actress explained that she was inspired to talk more openly about her issues after watching the movie "Girl Interrupted" with her mother.

Person has to be ready
According to Selena, you can't "force" someone to deal with mental health issues before they are ready.

"There were a lot of people who cared about me more than I cared about myself, who really wanted me to do things that I wasn't ready for. I had my low point and I had to hit it in my own time," said the 31-year-old. "It took a few tries, but I think and hope I'm in a much better place now."
