UN report:
Ukrainian prisoners of war tortured for months
A recent UN report accuses the Russian army of the most severe mistreatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war. These were "appalling", systematic and widespread, reported the UN Human Rights Council's Commission of Inquiry into Ukraine in Geneva on Friday.
According to the report, beatings and punishments with electric shocks are part of everyday life in the detention centers. In its latest report, the commission describes, among other things, the case of a man who had his coccyx, collarbone and teeth broken in captivity. He told the UN experts that he had been beaten so severely that he was bleeding from the anus. In his desperation, the man had tried to commit suicide. Since his release, he has had to undergo 36 operations.
"The victims' accounts show that they are brutally and constantly inflicted with severe pain and suffering for almost the entire period of their detention," it says. Prisoners would also suffer from hunger and would therefore eat worms, soap, paper and dog food in their distress.
Commission speaks of war crimes
According to the commission, torture by members of the Russian army and prison officers constitutes war crimes. The report also contains reports of torture and sexual crimes against Ukrainian civilians. In one case, a 42-year-old pregnant woman and her son's 17-year-old girlfriend were raped by two Russian soldiers.
