Stadlober narrowly misses out on the 10 km podium
Teresa Stadlober missed the podium in the 10 km classic at the cross-country skiing World Cup final in Falun on Saturday and finished fourth!
The 31-year-old from Salzburg, who had already finished a close fourth in the 50 km classic on the Holmenkollen a week ago, was just 2.9 seconds off the podium. It would have been her first World Cup podium finish in four years. Victory went to Finland's Kerttu Niskanen after 30:01.3 minutes, finishing 12.9 seconds ahead of Stadlober.
Mika Vermeulen also put in a strong performance. The World Cup bronze medalist from Canmore (15 km skating) also improved in the classic style and placed 6th in the 10 km competition, just 8.4 seconds behind the second-placed classic specialist Iivo Niskanen, Kerttu's brother. However, the Finn had no chance against Johannes Kläbo on Saturday afternoon, with the Norwegian beating him by a clear 22.1 seconds. Vermeulen was 6.5 seconds off the podium.
"Now I'm fourth again!"
Stadlober was close to the podium again in the women's race. In difficult conditions and heavy snowfall, Niskanen came out on top 4.2 seconds ahead of her compatriot Johanna Matintalo. Sweden's Jonna Sundling came third, exactly ten seconds behind the winner. "Now I've come fourth again. Apparently that's my 'lucky number' this season," Stadlober summed up.
"Even though I'm only just off the podium again, it was a really strong race from me," she said, but she was still satisfied. Especially as the conditions were extremely difficult. "We had really bad weather with a bad track where you have to run technically clean." Stadlober was pleased with the "super" material. "And now I'll just go for it again tomorrow."
The decision in the overall World Cup has not yet been made. The leading American Jessie Diggins, who finished fifth on the day just over ten seconds behind Stadlober, is 75 points ahead of the final 20 km event on Sunday in a duel with Sweden's Linn Svahn. Stadlober is twelfth overall in the World Cup.
