"Objectionable withdrawal"
Texas: Federal judge suspends abortion ban
A US court has temporarily halted the state of Texas' strict abortion law. The court will not grant "this offensive deprivation of such an important right" for another day. The government had filed a lawsuit against the so-called "heartbeat law", which prohibits most abortions in the state. From the moment the law came into force, women were unlawfully prevented from exercising control over their lives.
The law prohibits abortions as soon as the child's heartbeat has been detected. This can be the case as early as the sixth week of pregnancy. Many women do not yet know that they are pregnant at this point. What is unusual about the regulation is that it allows private individuals to take civil action against anyone who helps a woman to terminate a pregnancy.
Women have been fighting for their rights for weeks
The regulation allows lawsuits to be brought against a whole range of people - from cab drivers who drive a woman to the clinic to parents who support their daughter financially during an abortion. The Ministry of Justice spoke of "bounty hunters" and called the law "clearly unconstitutional". Just last weekend, thousands demonstrated again in the USA for the right to abortion.
Success could be short-lived
However, it can be assumed that the Republican government of Texas will challenge the court's current decision. In theory, clinics can now carry out such abortions again. However, they must continue to fear being sued if a higher court overturns the decision. Some clinics are therefore likely to continue to wait for a final legal clarification so as not to take any risks.
