"Precise" operation
Israeli army stormed hospital: dead and injured
In search of high-ranking leaders of the militant Palestinian organization Hamas, Israel's military stormed the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City on Monday night. The soldiers carried out a "precise" operation, the army reported.
They had been shot at and had returned fire. Hamas stated that the hospital building had been shot at without any attention being paid to patients, medical staff or those seeking shelter there.
According to the Hamas health authority in the Gaza Strip, a fire broke out. According to the Israeli army, intelligence information indicates that the clinic in the city of Gaza is being used by senior members of the Islamist Hamas to carry out terrorist activities.
Safe haven for Hamas members?
Al-Shifa Hospital is one of the few medical facilities still functioning in the Gaza Strip. Israel has long accused Hamas of using hospitals as hideouts. The Islamist group denies this.
The health authority announced that there was a fire at the entrance to the complex. Women and children who had fled were suffocating due to the smoke. People were trapped in operating theaters and the emergency room.
Communication with the hospital had been severed. "There are victims, including dead and injured people, and it is impossible to rescue anyone because the fire is so fierce," the authorities said in their statement. Anyone approaching the windows would be targeted.
Army: Hamas regroups in hospital
It was known that the Islamists had regrouped in the hospital in order to command attacks against Israel, said army spokesman Daniel Hagari. The soldiers had been instructed to proceed "carefully" and to take measures to prevent damage to patients, civilians, medical staff and medical equipment. Patients were not obliged to evacuate the complex.
