The number three in the leadership of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, Marwan Issa, has been killed in an Israeli military operation, according to the US government. Issa was killed last week, said White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Washington on Monday.

Issa was a member of the closest Hamas leadership circle. The Gaza-born deputy commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of Hamas, is said to have hidden in one of the notorious tunnels.

Second Hamas commander eliminated
This is the second Hamas commander to be "eliminated" by Israel in a short space of time. A few days ago, Muhammad Abu Hasna was killed in Rafah.

He was responsible for an operations center that passed on information about Israeli army positions in order to help with Hamas attacks. His targeted killing will significantly damage the operational capabilities of various Hamas units in Rafah, the Israeli armed forces said in a statement.

Biden and Netanyahu talk again
Meanwhile, the "ice age" between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come to an end, with the two speaking on the phone again on Monday after a lengthy break in their talks. The exchange was about the situation in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip and humanitarian aid for the people there, according to the White House. Biden and Netanyahu last spoke on the phone in mid-February.

In the coming days, the US government intends to meet with a high-ranking delegation from Israel to discuss concerns about the planned ground offensive in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. The National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, said that Biden had asked Netanyahu to send a team of representatives from the military, intelligence services and humanitarian aid specialists to Washington in the next few days. The aim was to explain the US government's reservations in detail and discuss possible alternatives. Netanyahu has agreed to send such a team.
