"Cliffhanger 2"
Sylvester Stallone returns to South Tyrol
Back on the rock (screen) wall after more than 30 years: Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone will also return to the South Tyrolean Dolomites for the sequel to his 1993 hit "Cliffhanger", which was announced last year. This was announced by the film promotion commission IDM Südtirol.
The original blockbuster was largely filmed in the Dolomites from April to August 1992 and was released on the big screen in summer 1993. It became one of Stallone's biggest hits of the 1990s with box office takings of around 255 million dollars worldwide.
Cliffhanger 2 filmed in the Dolomites
The South Tyrolean side is supporting the project with 400,000 euros, it was reported. Filming is to take place at locations in the South Tyrolean Alps, which were already featured 31 years ago, but were passed off as the Rocky Mountains in the first "Cliffhanger". Now the Dolomites are officially to be the setting for "Cliffhanger 2", reported the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" "FAZ".
According to the report, "Cliffhanger 2" is being produced by Black Magic Films (London) in collaboration with Supernix (Munich) and Original Films (USA). Supernix Austria is also said to be on board - as is Stallone's production company "Balboa Productions", according to an earlier report.
World star Stallone returns to Tyrol for successful film
In part 2 of the thriller, the protagonist Gabe Walker runs a mountain hut together with his daughter Sydney, according to IDM. When Gabe, Sydney and a rich guest are kidnapped, his daughter Naomi, traumatized by a tragic climbing accident, must face her fears in order to save her family.
Filming is scheduled to begin in the summer - and apparently also in Munich, specifically at the Penzing Studios there and in the city center. This was announced last year by FernsehFonds Bayern (FFF Bayern), which is supporting the production with two million euros. Jean-François Richet (Public Enemy, Plane) is now to direct, after Ric Roman Waugh had been listed for a long time.
Even after decades, world star Stallone is still one of the biggest names in Hollywood. And one of the busiest. Most recently, "Sly" celebrated great success with the Paramount+ series "Tulsa King". The 77-year-old Rocky and Rambo star is currently filming the thrillers "Armored" and "Alarum". The native New Yorker also recently made headlines as a reality TV star with the hit series "The Family Stallone".
