Following several serious attacks on the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has replaced his top naval commander.

Admiral Alexander Moiseyev (see picture below) has been appointed acting Commander-in-Chief of the Navy. He takes over from Nikolai Yevmenov, as the state news agencies RIA Novosti and TASS reported on Tuesday.

They showed pictures of the inauguration ceremony in the port of Kronstadt near St. Petersburg.

Moiseyev served on Russian nuclear submarines for more than 29 years. He was appointed commander of the Black Sea Fleet in 2018 and of the Northern Fleet in 2019. He is the recipient of Russia's highest honor: Hero of the Russian Federation. The Black Sea Fleet has always been based in the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014 in violation of international law.

Limited operational area of the Black Sea Fleet
Although Ukraine no longer has a functioning navy, it is said to have succeeded in damaging or sinking around 25 ships of the Black Sea Fleet in the two years since the start of the Russian invasion. That is just under a third of the fleet. Missiles, drones and, most recently, remote-controlled explosive boats have been used.

Due to this threat, the Russian Black Sea Fleet is forced to largely restrict itself to the eastern part of its operational area, the British Ministry of Defense wrote in its daily intelligence assessment on Tuesday.
