Nickelodeon: Ex-child stars reveal abuse
A new documentary has revealed many shocking details about the work of child stars on the Nickelodeon set. There are reports of sexual harassment and abuse.
The first two episodes of the four-part documentary series "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Children's Television" aired Sunday night on Investigation Discovery and revealed a number of disturbing details about the popular children's channel Nickelodeon in the 1990s and early 2000s.
"Quiet on Set" chronicles the toxic environment at Nickelodeon while mega-producer Dan Schneider was in charge, creating and producing hit series like "The Amanda Show," "Drake & Josh," "iCarly" and "Zoey 101."
There was no evidence
Schneider and Nickelodeon parted ways in 2018 after 20 years of working together, after an investigation by US media group Paramount Global found no evidence of sexual misconduct but concluded that Schneider had been verbally abusive on set, according to a report in the New York Times.
The producer denied all allegations. "I could not and would not have the long-term friendships and enduring loyalty of so many reputable people if I had mistreated my actors of any age, especially minors," he said at the time.
Schneider's behavior "got worse and worse"
The only two female writers of "The Amanda Show" recounted Schneider's impossible behavior in the documentary. "Dan got worse and worse as the season went on. Because it was my first time writing, I didn't know what was acceptable and what wasn't," Jenny Kilgen admitted.
According to "Entertainment Weekly", she revealed in the documentary that Schneider had shown her porn and said things like "Please massage me, I'll put one of your sketches in the show". The young woman always felt like she would be fired if she disagreed with Schneider.
Assistant sent nude pictures to minors
But Schneider is not the only one accused of abuse. In the first two episodes of the investigative series, former Nickelodeon actresses recounted their experiences with production assistant Jason Handy, who worked on "All That" and "The Amanda Show" in the early 2000s.
Handy was arrested in 2003 after law enforcement received a tip about him. The documentary stated that when police searched his home, they found more than 10,000 images of children and seven videos on CD files of children engaged in sexual acts.
Another of Handy's victims, a young guest star in the series "Cousin Skeeter" on Nickelodeon, was raped by the production assistant in 2000. In 2004, Handy was sentenced to six years in prison.
