Alcaraz on his coach: “One thing he always says: smile”
Carlos Alcaraz really got going for the first time at the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. After winning the title in California, the Spaniard is not only the top seed in Miami in the absence of Novak Djokovic, but is also going for the "Sunshine Double". The 20-year-old world number two's long-time coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, is probably one of the reasons for his upward trend. "He means a lot to me," said Alcaraz in the run-up to the event.
Alcaraz had sorely missed his coach at the Australian Open because the 2003 French Open champion had to undergo knee surgery. Alcaraz was eliminated in the quarter-finals. The now 44-year-old former world number one then returned to the South American appearances.
Following in Federer's footsteps
The title in the Californian desert puts an end to a dry spell that many had not expected - after all, Alcaraz had not won a title since Wimbledon in July last year. Now he could become the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win the aforementioned double.
With Ferrero in the box. "One of the things he says to me the most is 'smile'," said Alcaraz on Tuesday in Florida. "It's a great support when you have him in the pits. His help is special to me. We've come a long way together, it's been six years now."
He has learned a lot from Ferrero, both on and off the court. The ankle injury he brought with him to Indian Wells is no longer an issue. "I feel great physically and mentally. I'm ready for the tournament," said Alcaraz. He starts after a walk-through against Aleksandar Vukic (AUS) or compatriot Roberto Carballes Baena.
