Mozzarella from Austria becomes a hit in Italy

Mattighofen! Many people think of Stefan Pierer's motorcycle empire with the brands KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and MV Agusta. What few people know: In Feldkirchen, ten kilometers away in Upper Austria, Berglandmilch produces mozzarella. And because the Italians like it so much, production is being expanded.

In the coming days, the expansion at the Berglandmilch plant in Feldkirchen near Mattighofen will be completed and the increased production can then be ramped up. "We are doubling our mozzarella ball capacity," says Managing Director Josef Braunshofer.

More cheese to satisfy the appetite in Germany and Italy
According to Braunshofer, there are already customers for the additional 125-gram pieces, which are produced in the Innviertel region. "We are moving strongly in the direction of Germany and, interestingly, Italy," says the head of Austria's largest dairy. Mozzarella from Austria is an export hit for our neighbors, who apparently rely on cheese from Feldkirchen for pizza and caprese.

When it gets warmer, demand increases
Who is the typical mozzarella buyer? "It's a product for young consumers," says the Berglandmilch boss. And one for warmer days. Because the dairy manager knows: "The time for mozzarella is just beginning. When it gets really warm at the end of March, our planner has to take that into account. As soon as the temperatures rise, demand jumps to four times the sales we had last time. We have to be prepared for that."
