After conviction
Reactivation: FPÖ politician resigns
A Freedom Party politician has now drawn the consequences following his conviction at the regional court.
As reported, a man from northern Burgenland was convicted of violating the Prohibition Act. Between October 2017 and November 2020, the libertarian had shared and commented on absurd theories on Facebook. Among other things, the trial at the regional court in Eisenstadt concerned a picture in which a comparison was drawn between the coronavirus measures and the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era.
Conditional imprisonment and fine
At the trial, however, the defendant stated that he only wanted to quench his thirst for knowledge on the internet. For example, he had wanted to find out where the word Nazi came from. Nevertheless, the jury unanimously found him guilty. The man received a ten-month conditional prison sentence and a fine of 4,500 euros.
Function is resigned
As the Freedom Party politician is also a substitute local councillor in northern Burgenland, the conviction also attracted the attention of political observers. The politician has now drawn the consequences and resigned from his position. This was confirmed on Wednesday by the responsible party chairman when asked. The party chairman announced that the municipality would be informed of this in a letter on Wednesday evening.
