World Cup final in Saalbach! Who will grab the crystal globe in the last super-G of the season? We report live (ticker below).
Here is the live ticker:
The intermediate standings:
Two Austrians are still chasing Lara Gut-Behrami in the speed final in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. In the super-G on Friday, Cornelia Hütter is trying to steal the small crystal globe from the Swiss season high-flyer. However, with a 69-point gap, Hütter confirmed that something extraordinary would have to happen for her first career crystal. "I need a dream run and Lara has to be in the garage."
It is unlikely that Gut-Behrami will voluntarily "park herself" after her double bullet coup last weekend. Hütter also doesn't believe that her experienced rival will let her guard down. "I don't think she's out of steam at all. She's a thoroughbred racer and certainly wants to make the most of every opportunity."
Full throttle is the only option
If Gut-Behrami had been standing next to Hütter at that moment, she would have nodded. After her short stay at home and the downhill training on Wednesday, the Ticino native said: "When you're at the start, you think that you want to achieve even more." She can't afford to tactic like in the giant slalom in the speed disciplines. "Going full throttle is the only plan I have," said Gut-Behrami.
Conversely, this is also what ÖSV head coach Roland Assinger expects from Hütter and Stephanie Venier, who, like Hütter, still has a crystal chance on Saturday's downhill. "We just have to go full attack and hope that Gut might have one or two little slip-ups." The lead provides a cushion, reminded Assinger. "But you can't dawdle either, a lot can happen down there. The slope can deteriorate, you need to be lucky with your start number. I'm expecting excitement."
Eighth place is enough for Gut-Behrami
It is most likely that Gut-Behrami will add a fifth Super-G globe to her already bulging trophy cabinet. This would put her on a par with record-breaking Lindsey Vonn and Katja Seizinger. An eighth place would be enough. If she also capitalizes on her lead in the Downhill World Cup, it would even be four globes in one winter. Only Vonn (2010, 2012), Tina Maze (2013) and Mikaela Shiffrin (2019) have ever achieved this feat.
Federica Brignone is also in the mix. The Italian, who recently excelled in the giant slalom, has just five points fewer than Hütter and one more victory in the super-G this season. Hütter celebrated the home triumph in Zauchensee and three second places in the eight races of the season. When the 31-year-old finished, which she only failed to do in Cortina d'Ampezzo, she was never worse than seventh.
"Can only win now"
"I have a top three in the super-G ranking, I've never achieved that in my career, I can only win now," said Hütter. She therefore wants to remain true to her previous approach in the showdown. She ruled out kamikaze for the bullet. "I'm going to do it completely straight away. I'm always calculating my risk well at the moment. I take risks, but I make sure that I don't take senseless risks."
With Mirjam Puchner, Ariane Rädler and Christina Ager alongside Hütter and Venier, the ÖSV has five racers in the final super-G. While Rädler from Vorarlberg, who came second in the downhill training, immediately built up a good feeling on the spring snow, Puchner from Salzburg was still "racing around in world history" for the time being. Puchner, who has already finished third on the Super-G podium twice this year, did not show any exuberant optimism for the final two races. She had her sights set on a surprise. "I want to show that this snow suits me too."
