“Reichsbürger” dies shortly before trial begins
A defendant from the alleged "Reichsbürger" group around Heinrich XIII Prince Reuß has died before the start of his trial. According to media reports, the man had recently been seriously ill.
"Mr. Norbert G. recently died in hospital," a spokeswoman for the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court, where the trial against the man was soon to begin, told the German Press Agency. G. had been arrested on December 7, 2022, but had been spared custody since the beginning of January 2024, the statement continued.
27 suspects charged
Together with nine other suspects, the federal prosecutor's office indicted the then 72-year-old Norbert G. in Frankfurt in December last year. Among other things, they are accused of membership in or support of a terrorist organization and preparation of a highly treasonous enterprise.
The background to this is a large-scale anti-terror raid in December 2022 in several German federal states and abroad. The federal prosecutor's office has charged a total of 27 suspects - also before the higher regional courts in Munich and Stuttgart.
Ringleaders stand trial in Frankfurt
In Frankfurt, it is primarily the suspected ringleaders who are on trial, in Stuttgart the so-called military arm and in Munich the other suspected members. The Higher Regional Courts in Munich and Frankfurt have not yet decided whether to open the proceedings. The trial in Stuttgart starts on April 29.
The so-called Reich Citizens in Germany claim that the German Reich (1871-1945) continues to exist, hence their name. They do not recognize the Federal Republic and its laws.
