Opel plant in Vienna-Aspern ceases production

The production of manual gearboxes will be discontinued in July.

Last year, Opel's parent company Stellantis announced that it would be phasing out production in Vienna-Aspern. Now it is a sad certainty: series production will end in July 2024, affecting 220 employees. 50 to 60 will still be working in the summer. A social plan and support measures are planned for the others.

The workforce at the Opel plant in Vienna-Aspern was informed today, Thursday, that series production of mechanical transmissions will finally be shut down in July 2024. Around a year ago, parent company Stellantis (the group includes brands such as Alfa, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel and Peugeot) announced its intention to discontinue production.

Around 220 employees affected
Around 220 employees are affected. By the summer, the number should have fallen to between 50 and 60. A comprehensive social plan and numerous support measures (job center, direct contact with more than 120 companies, around 50 in-house company presentations, external job counseling, etc.) will continue to be offered.

The "Krone" already reported on the impending closure of the plant in June 2023.

Work is underway on subsequent use
At the same time, the company is working intensively on a subsequent use for the site. Initial talks with potential interested parties in Austria have already begun, according to reports. The site belongs to the state-owned real estate company BIG. The company also wants to bring in internal Group experience gained in Slovakia, for example. The aim is to continue the recent establishment of new activities in Aspern. One example is the conversion of the former training workshop in cooperation with the BFI.
