3 own goals in the final
Sasa Kalajdzic’s sister celebrates after drama
Injured team striker Sasa Kalajdzic was delighted with his twelve-year-old sister Sara, who regained the title at the "Krone" Indoor Cup with Polgarstraße after a dramatic final with three own goals against Ella Lingens Gymnasium.
Bundesliga players Verena Volkmer and Stefanie Schneeberger (both Austria Vienna) were amazed at the standard of play at the Krone Indoor Cup in the Westside Soccer Arena: "It was very well-maintained soccer and a really great final." In the final, the defending champions from Ella Lingens Gymnasium and Polgarstraße played a dramatic match in the rematch from the previous year.
Three own goals in an open exchange of blows
The Polgar girls took the lead twice, but completely unfortunate own goals by goalkeeper Eulalie Krzywon (once the ball bounced off the boards onto her back, once off the crossbar onto her back) equalized the scores. The quick and powerful Ella Wieneritsch scored to make it 3:2 for Ella Lingens. After the break, Nivaria Imlinger equalized with a left-footed shot into the corner of the net, before Wieneritsch made it 4:3 right from the kick-off. A bitter Ella Lingens own goal made it 4:4 and set up a penalty shoot-out.
The youngest players as heroes
After the first six players had scored, the two youngest Polgar girls shone. First goalkeeper Eulalie Krzywon made a save, then Lenia Knofl converted the winner. The team threw the only two first-year players in the final squad into the air before the award ceremony and mercilessly showered coach Karlheinz Piringer. Sara Kalajdzic (12), sister of the currently injured team striker Sasa, was right in the middle of the jubilation. The SV Hirschstetten player smiled: "Unlike my brother, I play in defense." Afterwards, she and her teammates consoled their opponents, who had won the penalty shoot-out in 2023 and shed bitter tears of disappointment this time.
"I'm proud of you because you dared to do it"
Karl Windisch, coach of the Ella Lingens Gymnasium team, emphasized: "I am very proud of my team. They played an outstanding tournament. The final was top class. A penalty shoot-out is always a lottery. Last year we were the luckier team, not this year." He said to the player who missed the penalty: "I'm proud of you because, unlike other players, you dared to take responsibility. Missing a penalty has happened to the best players in the world. These experiences are part of the sport."
Karlheinz Piringer, coach of Polgarstrasse, breathed a sigh of relief: "It was a cool, but also nerve-wracking final. Big compliments to both teams. That was an advertisement for girls' soccer."
Bundesliga aces honored top players
Bundesliga players Verena Volkmer and Stefanie Schneeberger then honored the top players of the tournament. The most valuable player of the tournament was Annika Amon (Ludwig von Höhnel), the top scorer was Ella Wieneritsch (26 goals/Ella Lingens), the best goalkeeper was Eulalie Krzywon (Polgarstraße) and the best player in the final was Mia Jungwirth (Polgarstraße).
