After cancer shock:
This is how hard Kate found it to tell the kids
Princess Kate and Prince William have really "struggled" to tell their children about their cancer. This is also evident in the video message (watch above) in which Kate made her illness public on Friday.
More than a month after her serious abdominal operation, which must have already disrupted her family life and caused her children deep concern, the Princess of Wales received the terrible news at the end of February that cancer cells had been discovered after all. This had actually been ruled out after the operation.
"The news was a huge shock"
"This news was of course a huge shock, and William and I have done everything we can to process and deal with it privately, for the sake of our young family," Kate gave an insight into the drama she had to deal with alongside the upcoming preventative chemotherapy.
Attention to the children
A source told "ET" that the princess is doing everything she can to support her children. She and Prince William found it very difficult to tell their children about Kate's diagnosis.
"Their main concern was to explain it to the children in a way that would reassure them and that they could cope with." And that took time. Prince George (10) and Princess Charlotte (8), who have Ipads at school and of course already surf the internet, also had to be armed against the many rumors surrounding their mom. A close friend of the couple revealed to The Times newspaper: "Kate and William have done everything they can to protect the children so they don't find out everything that has happened. The children at school are talking, so that was their main concern."
Overshadowed 6th birthday
And Prince Louis, who turned six on Saturday (23.03.2024), is also likely to need a lot of attention and love as Kate's little nestling.
Kate explicitly points this out in her video, warning everyone who has put pressure on her in recent months to show themselves in public.
"As you can imagine, this took time. I had to recover from the serious operation to be able to start treatment. But the most important thing for us was to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that was suitable for them as children and to reassure them that I would be fine," she explains.
They told them: "I'm fine and I'm getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that help me heal - mentally, physically and emotionally."
Whole family supports Kate and the children
The Princess receives a lot of support from her family. Since her operation, her mother Carole Middleton has always been there for her and her grandchildren. Princess Kate's sister Pippa and her brother James have always been there for their nephews and nieces. They are likely to provide a distraction and are sure to give Louis a surprise or two on his birthday despite worrying about his mother.
King Charles praised the openness of his "beloved daughter-in-law". The monarch is "so proud of Catherine for her courage" in talking about her illness, Buckingham Palace announced. He is said to give his grandchildren special birthday presents every year and could go the extra mile this year.
William, my "source of confidence"
But Kate relies on her husband Prince William the most. "Having William by my side is a great comfort and a source of confidence," she says in the video. According to British media, William has put everything aside to be there for his wife and children.
The Prince and Princess of Wales will not be making an appearance at Easter, as they did last year when they attended the Easter service with Prince George and Princess Charlotte in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.
It is not yet clear what will happen after that. For now, Kate needs to focus on her preventative chemotherapy. "My work has always given me great pleasure and I look forward to returning to it as soon as I am able. But right now I need to focus fully on my recovery."
Preventive chemotherapy is the use of chemotherapy drugs in people who do not yet have cancer but are at increased risk of developing it. The aim is to prevent or delay the development of cancer.
There are two types of preventive chemotherapy:
- Chemoprevention: this type of preventative chemotherapy is used for people who are at high risk of developing a certain type of cancer, for example due to a genetic predisposition or a history of cancer in the family. The drugs used in chemoprevention can, for example, inhibit the growth of cancer cells or prevent DNA damage caused by free radicals.
- Adjuvant chemotherapy: This type of preventive chemotherapy is used after surgery to remove cancer cells in order to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
Until now, the palace had always emphasized that the 42-year-old would return to the public eye after Easter. This means that two of the most important and popular royals will be absent for a longer period of time: Kate's father-in-law King Charles III is also being treated for cancer.
