Six quadruple jumps
Record! Ilia Malinin wins World Championship gold with a brilliant free skate
US figure skater Ilia Malinin has won the World Championship title for the first time with an impressive free skate. The 19-year-old performed six flawless quadruple jumps on Saturday (local time) in Montreal and was rewarded with a freestyle record score and the gold medal. "This means a lot to me," he said. Malinin finished almost 24 points ahead of Japan's Yuma Kagiyama. Third place went to the French European champion Adam Siao Him Fa.
Malinin once again lived up to his nickname as the "God of quadruple jumps". Among the jumps, each with four revolutions, was the Axel and therefore the most difficult challenge. At the end of the program to music from the series "Succession", the US American dropped to the ice. Austrian Maurizio Zandron came 27th and had to watch the final day of the World Championships from the stands.
The US ice dancers Madison Chock/Evan Bates successfully defended their World Championship title with an expressive free skate to "Time" by Pink Floyd. Silver went to the Canadians Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier, who won the free skating competition but fell short of their rivals overall. European champions Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri from Italy took bronze.
