Nepalese restaurant faces eviction

The owners no longer understand the world. There have never been any problems in over two decades. They therefore suspect that luxury apartments are to take the place of their restaurant - which will be rented out at a higher price.

For almost 25 years, the Yak & Yeti restaurant has been serving authentic Nepalese cuisine and, thanks to numerous events, is the place to go for anyone interested in the country in the Himalayas.

Goods parked for too long
But if the owners of the building that houses the restaurant in Mariahilf have their way, this will soon be history. They are facing eviction proceedings. "The main reason for this is the allegation that we were storing food and other items for the restaurant in the common areas," explains managing director Raj Mandil Shrestha. This is documented in photos. But: "We never stored it there, we only put it down briefly when deliveries came."

In the restaurant, you not only enjoy Nepalese cuisine, but also learn a lot about the country's culture.

Is there another reason for the eviction?
In general, silent partner Raju Gurung suspects other reasons for the eviction attempt: "We are one of the last old tenants with an open-ended contract. If they get us out, they can build luxury apartments and rent them out at a higher price." Shortly after the pandemic, the property management offered them 70,000 euros to move out, which they refused.

The next court hearing is scheduled for July. Until then, the restaurant will remain open as normal. You can also sign a petition on site (6th, Hofmühlgasse 21), which 1,000 people have already done, including mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner.

The house owners did not respond to a "Krone" inquiry.
