Life is getting rougher
Security alert in the country: 1447 reports per day
The crime statistics are causing quite a stir again this year. A whopping 528,010 reports were filed in 2023, the equivalent of 1447 per day. Around 45 percent of suspects now come from abroad, but smuggling crime is on the decline.
It is thanks to the diligence of Austrian police officers that Austria is still one of the safest countries in the world. But even on the supposed "island of the blessed", life is getting rougher. This is also proven by the figures in the latest crime statistics: exactly 520,010 reports were filed last year - an increase of 8.2 percent - and the equivalent of 1447 crimes in just one day. Although more than half of the incidents were solved, safety is a different matter.
"Big Five" keep investigators busy around the clock
The big chunks in the daily criminal work are still property crime (162,242 offences), white-collar crime (103,330), violent crime (85,374), cybercrime (65,864 offences) and organized crime (40,333). Assault & Co. alone account for around 16 percent of all cases processed. The comparison with other forms of crime is remarkable, as "only" just over 40,000 assaults were reported last year, but almost 65,900 cybercrimes.
More perpetrators identified, almost half of them foreigners
There was also a sharp increase in the number of suspects investigated: 329,991 people were identified by the police in 2023. However, according to statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, more than 45 percent were not Austrian citizens. Incidentally, most "crime tourists" come from Romania, Germany, Serbia and Syria (see chart).
The danger posed by foreign criminal groups - primarily from the East - is also being closely monitored with regard to illegal immigration. However, the various measures against smuggling should have an effect. The deployment of 130 Austrian police officers in various countries in the Western Balkans and Operation Fox on Hungarian territory are mentioned in particular by those responsible.
With 4704 reports of people smuggling in 2023, the number was almost halved compared to 9186 reports in 2022. A remarkable 725 criminals were arrested in the previous year. However, the danger remains high.
