Red victory in Salzburg
Only one provincial capital still has an ÖVP leader
Following the run-off election in the city of Salzburg, the SPÖ will once again have a majority of mayors in the provincial capitals - namely in a total of five. The ÖVP now only has one.
Salzburg's election winner Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ) will be officially sworn in as the new mayor on May 8. In addition to him, Michael Ritsch in Bregenz, Klaus Luger in Linz, Matthias Stadler in St. Pölten and Michael Ludwig in Vienna are all Social Democrat mayors.
Eisenstadt with ÖVP mayor
Thomas Steiner holds the fort for the People's Party in Eisenstadt. In Salzburg, the ÖVP was unable to successfully defend the post of city leader, with the current mayor Harald Preuner not standing in the first ballot at the beginning of March.
In the other cities, representatives of three other parties are at the helm. The fact that Austria's second largest city, Graz, has a communist mayor in Elke Kahr also attracted international interest when she was elected in 2021. In Klagenfurt, Christian Scheider from Team Carinthia sits in the mayor's seat.
Green mayor must beat election soon
Georg Willi in Innsbruck is the only Green leader of a provincial capital. He is the next one to have to beat an election. The local council and mayoral elections in the Tyrolean capital are due on April 14.
