Vienna State Opera
Shush-rattling in polonaise time
The Vienna State Ballet has added John Neumeier's legendary, but already somewhat grey, creation "The Lady of the Camellias" to its state opera repertoire. A great challenge, which was not mastered overly convincingly.
November 4, 1978 was a great day for the Stuttgart Ballet: Marcia Haydée, John Cranko's legendary prima ballerina, took to the stage as "The Lady of the Camellias". John Neumeier had choreographed Dumas' world-famous TBC sufferer into her dancer's soul. To music by Chopin, a lot of solo piano, but also with orchestra. In 1987, the death of the courtesan was filmed. Haydée was no longer young, but the elegance and expression of her Marguerite Gautier alongside Ivan Liška as Armand Duval continue to inspire (on DVD). All ballet history. In 2014, Neumeier's Hamburg Ballet performed it at the Theater an der Wien. Stefan Vladar sat at the piano!
From glorious history to the Viennese present. Almost 50 years later, the Staatsballett tries its hand at a long evening filler. A challenge. Neumeier has choreographed demanding, elaborate and even mannered pieces for the dancers. Not everyone can master this technically and then fill it with expression. Not even at the Staatsballett. Jürgen Rose's still elegant set can't take the patina off the whole thing either.
After all, the suffering remains great, elegiac. This is also where Ketevan Papava is most convincing in the Haydée role. As Armand, Timoor Afshar begs for presence. To further increase the pressure of compassion, the other world literature courtesan is allowed in front of the curtain as a mirror image. Manon Lescaut languishes towards the end accompanied by Des Grieux. Hyo-Jung Kang and Marcos Menha do this beautifully. Chopin's music lays the soft mourning pall underneath. The inferior way in which it is played at the piano makes you sit up and take notice.
