Tragic traffic accident on Monday morning in Köflach, Styria: A 91-year-old man did not realize that he had hit and run over his wife when he backed his car out of the garage. All help came too late for the 84-year-old.

The tragic incident occurred at around 10 a.m. in Köflach in the Styrian district of Voitsberg. The 91-year-old man reversed his car out of the driveway of his garage. In doing so, he probably overlooked his 84-year-old wife standing behind the vehicle and ran her over.

He probably did not even notice that the accident had occurred and drove off to go shopping as planned, while the woman was left lying on the ground. Passers-by who had just walked past saw the man drive away and then discovered the 84-year-old woman.

Autopsy ordered
The emergency doctor from the Voitsberg Red Cross and the emergency doctor from the Christophorus 12 rescue helicopter tried to help, but could only determine that the 84-year-old woman had died. She died of multiple organ failure. It was only when her husband returned home with the shopping that he saw what had happened, according to the police. He stated that he had not noticed anything about the accident.

An autopsy of the body was ordered by the public prosecutor's office in Graz. The driver will be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
