Bail paid
Dani Alves back at liberty after 14 months in prison
After a good 14 months, professional Dani Alves, who was convicted of sexual aggression in Spain, is free again for the first time. The Brazilian left the Brians 2 prison northwest of Barcelona on Monday afternoon. He had previously paid the bail of one million euros that the judiciary had set for his provisional release.
Accompanied by his lawyer, walking briskly, with a serious expression and without making any statements, the 40-year-old got into a car, as was shown live on the state television station RTVE.
The former Barça professional was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in Barcelona in February. His lawyers appealed against the sentence at the time. Alves is now free to await the court's decision in this matter, as the competent court decided last week at the convicted man's request.
Passports withheld
In order to prevent him from fleeing the country, the judiciary decided to withhold the two passports of the sportsman, who has also held Spanish citizenship since 2005. In addition to other conditions, Alves is also not allowed to approach his victim. He must also report to court once a week.
According to media reports, Alves had had difficulties putting together the required bail. The superstar's father denied reports that his compatriot Neymar would lend him money. Media in Spain and Brazil had recently reported that the convicted footballer had relatively little money left.
Assault in a nightclub?
Alves was sentenced on February 22. He must also pay the victim 150,000 euros. He had already been in custody for a good year before the verdict after a young woman accused him of forcing her to have sex in a toilet at a nightclub in Barcelona on the night of December 31, 2022. Alves denied the allegations during the trial. The sexual acts had taken place with the woman's consent.
The 126-time Seleção international, who also played for Sevilla FC, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus Turin in Europe, was only arrested three weeks after the incident - on 20 January of the previous year - during a visit to Catalonia. Until his arrest, he had played in Mexico for the club UNAM Pumas.
