“The Kreischer”: the most extraordinary ski race
With the longest giant slalom in the world, the most extraordinary ski race of the season took place on the Kreischberg on Saturday. The challenge attracted over 812 participants and was peppered with great performances.
6.7 kilometers in length and 250 directional gates lined the course, which wound its way through the ski resort. The sold-out field of starters overcame the challenge with courageous runs and elegant turns. Strained muscles were unavoidable at the end of the race, but the satisfaction of the achievement clearly outweighed this. Fantastic weather and an exuberant atmosphere provided the perfect setting and underlined the reputation of the Kreischer as an exceptional ski race.
The fastest of the 812 starters, who were sent into the race not far from the Rosenkranzhöhe at 2118 meters above sea level, was 19-year-old Felix Wirnsberger at the end of the day. The Styrian reached the finish line at the Kreischbergbahn valley station after a time of 8:00.5 minutes.
The fastest lady, Alina Steger, needed 9 minutes and 50 seconds for the 1250 meters in altitude. This meant that the 14-year-old, also from Styria, was able to lift the challenge cup for herself and Felix Wirnsberger. Over 35 young winter sports enthusiasts took on the Kids Kreischer challenge last weekend. They mastered the original course with great ambition and skill. At the finish line, the young racers were celebrated like the biggest stars.
Sumann, Schöffmann and Payer among the winners
The only requirement for the choice of snow sports equipment was a steel edge. Whether alpine skis, short skis, telemark skis, cross-country skis, snowboards, big feet or their own creations - there were no limits to the participants' creativity. Former biathlete Christoph Sumann, who conquered the Kreischer for the second time, gave an impressive demonstration of what is possible with cross-country skis. The multiple medal winner at the Olympic Games and World Championships reached the finish line after an impressive 15 minutes and 18 seconds. Snowboard pros Sabine Schöffmann and Alex Payer, who were also among the numerous starters, also got their money's worth.
For Managing Director Karl Fussi, it was an all-round successful day. It remains to be seen whether the participants' thighs will be screaming again in 2026.
