Trial in Graz
Jealousy: 31-year-old wanted to strangle rival
A jealousy drama among harvest workers in eastern Styria occupied a jury court on Tuesday: a Romanian (31) came to Styria by cab and attacked the new boyfriend of his "ex": two and a half years in prison - not legally binding!
A 31-year-old Romanian stood trial for attempted murder in Graz on Tuesday. He allegedly tried to strangle his ex's new boyfriend with a belt in October 2023. But how did it happen?
Weapon purchase from cab driver
The 31-year-old's partner was working as a harvest helper in Puch near Weiz at the time of the crime. She called her partner from there and told him that she had met a new man and wanted to separate. But the Romanian refused to accept this: He got into a cab and drove - for around 900 euros - to Styria. According to his own statements, he drank whiskey on the way and also bought a "dagger-like knife" from the cab driver, the public prosecutor explained in court.
Workers intervened
With this weapon in his hand, he went to the harvest workers' quarters - but put the weapon down before the two rivals got into a physical altercation. When the woman tried to intervene, she was hit and fell to the ground. Her new boyfriend knelt down next to her and the 31-year-old took this opportunity to take his belt and choke the victim. Other workers intervened and the man got off lightly. The attacker was charged with attempted murder.
In court, he now emphasized that he had never wanted to kill his rival. He had only hoped to take the woman back to Romania with him. "I didn't threaten anyone," he emphasized. He had told the police: "I wanted revenge."
"I have a movie tear"
When the judge wanted to know why he had had a knife with him, the 31-year-old replied: "I thought she might come home with me sooner." He could not remember the incident with the belt. "He punched me, then I got a movie tear," was all he said.
In the end, the jury found that it was not attempted murder, but attempted grievous bodily harm. Sentence: two and a half years in prison (not final).
