Oh, how beautiful it is!
ÖFB goal show: “It doesn’t get much better than this”
6:1 goal show against Turkey - team boss Ralf Rangnick was delighted with the ÖFB team's performance in the second 45 minutes: "It doesn't get much better than after the break!" Austria's fans are already full of anticipation for the EURO: "Oh, how beautiful it is!"
"Land of mountains, land of fields, land of lightning goals" - Austria's national anthem should actually be rewritten soon. Because Christoph Baumgartner's world record goal last Saturday in Bratislava against Slovakia after 6.3 seconds was followed yesterday against Turkey by the next "lightning strike" from red-white-red - even in the truest sense of the word, because the scorer after 103 seconds was Xaver Schlager.
And this time it was even a day of double lightning goals, immediately after the break it only took 178 seconds for Michael Gregoritsch to make it 3:1. Gregoritsch had already made it 2:1 just before the break (44') and then added a penalty in the 59th minute - three goals within 15 minutes, also a record, the first time the 29-year-old has scored more than one goal in an international match.
He now has a total of 15 team goals - and another detail: When Gregoritsch scores, Austria doesn't lose! Ten wins and three draws is the balance in those games in which the "Gregerl" was successful.
Two games, two victories
Yesterday, his festive performances ensured the second victory in the second game of 2024, two victories to kick off a year in which Austria is involved in a major soccer event, the last time before the 1982 World Cup - 3:2 in Budapest against Hungary, 2:1 in Vienna against the CSSR. Further highlights:
- The 6:1 is the highest win since the 6:0 against Latvia on September 6, 2019 in Salzburg!
- The 6:1 is the highest win in the team manager era of Ralf Rangnick!
- The 6:1 is the highest victory of all time against Turkey - historic!
After Turkey is now before the EURO, the team will meet again on May 29th in Windischgarsten for the final preparations for the European Championship, including the two test matches against Serbia on June 4th in Vienna and Switzerland on June 8th in St. Gallen. The fans are full of anticipation for the EURO, singing "Oh, how beautiful it is" in the Ernst Happel Stadium.
Poland our third opponent
"The second 45 minutes were simply perfect, you can't play better than that, when we play against the ball like that, it's not easy to play against us, it was an extremely strong team performance, also in terms of energy," team boss Ralf Rangnick "warned" our opponents at the EURO.
Which, as of yesterday, also includes Poland - 5:4 on penalties (0:0 after 120 minutes) against Wales. Will, bite, a bit of luck in decisive and important phases, plus men who score - that's how Austria can make this EURO a really great one!
