Baltimore: Search for survivors suspended

Following the collapse of a major highway bridge in the US city of Baltimore, emergency services have recovered two bodies from the water. The Maryland State Police announced on Wednesday evening (local time) that divers had found a vehicle in the water this morning in which two people were trapped. They could only be recovered dead.

On Tuesday evening, the US Coast Guard announced that the search for survivors would be suspended due to the low water temperature and the late hour.

The current and debris in the water were dangerous for the rescue teams. On Wednesday, divers then began searching for the bodies of six missing people.

The police explained on Wednesday evening that the conditions in the water around the huge pieces of rubble were now so dangerous that divers could no longer move around safely. All search efforts at the site had been exhausted.

There is no trace of six other people
A huge container ship had rammed into the four-lane, more than 2.5-kilometer-long freeway bridge on Tuesday night (local time), causing it to collapse. According to Paul Wiedefeld, Secretary of Transportation for the state of Maryland, eight construction workers were on the more than 2.5-kilometre-long bridge at the time of the accident, repairing potholes.

Two people were rescued on Tuesday, but there was no trace of six others.
