Despite injury:
Thiem must score points against falling out of the top 100
Following his statement on his recurring wrist problems, Dominic Thiem has published an intensive tournament schedule on his website. In addition to Estoril (from Easter Monday) and Munich, where he will receive a wild card, the world number 90 also wants to play in the Masters 1000 tournaments in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome. Read a commentary by "Krone" editor Gernot Bachler here.
The fact that something is wrong with Dominic Thiem's wrist again is as sad as it is unsurprising. Watching his matches in Szekesfehervar and Zadar, it was easy to suspect that the Austrian tennis star was once again having problems with his arm. His forehand seemed so weak at times.
It is therefore all the more surprising that the 30-year-old will be able to play again in Estoril on Monday - against stronger competition than he recently faced at the two Challengers. This at least suggests that Thiem's wrist can't be that bad after all.
But perhaps it is even more important for him to avoid dropping out of the top 100 at all costs. Because Dominic absolutely has to score points in the next few weeks. Over the next three weeks, Thiem will drop 135 points from Estoril, Monte Carlo and Munich from last year's ranking. If you look at the ranking's three-week forecast, in which the points to be defended have already been deducted from all players, the Austrian is only ranked 100th - exactly on the date when the cut-off for French Open participation is made. Thiem could therefore have to hope for a wild card through the qualifiers. If you go one week further to April 22, he would only be 106th.
