Mayer as the golden shooter
GAK rushes away: “The table speaks for itself!”
With a narrow 1:0 in the top match at Ried, GAK moved further ahead in the second division and are currently already 14 points ahead of their closest rivals Leoben. Thomas Mayer was the acclaimed hero for the Red Devils with his debut goal. He is recharging his batteries with his family over the Easter holidays.
The perfect Easter present! Thomas Mayer gave himself just such a present on Friday in the top match at Ried. Because it was against his former club that he scored his first goal to give GAK a 1:0 win. "I couldn't have picked a better time to do it. It couldn't have come at a better time," grinned Mayer, who comes from just 15 minutes away from Ried. "You could see again what a broad squad we have. The changes have brought about a turnaround, a jolt through the team. That's now the decisive factor for us."
His first goal means a lot to the 28-year-old. "I've been striving for this for a long time. For me it's always the same whether it's a goal or an assist, the main thing is that I help the team. But then I stopped thinking about it, because I was a bit desperate at first," Mayer is honest. But since the winter preparations, he has really blossomed and feels much more comfortable, as he says himself. "The new position and even the system was quite a change for me. In terms of fitness, I laid the foundations for my great current form in the winter. I'm happy to be able to show what I'm really made of."
"A great feeling"
But the Easter snack didn't just taste special because of his goal. The lead in League Two is very reassuring with nine rounds to go. "Of course you look at the table because it's a nice feeling. And it speaks for itself," says Mayer with a broad chest. "But the next important game awaits next weekend with Leoben. But beating us is very difficult."
Coach Gernot Messner gave his men the Easter holidays off. Training continues on Tuesday. Time that Mayer enjoys at home in Upper Austria with his family. "I can really recharge my batteries there. My son is really looking forward to Easter, so we want to make it as nice as possible for him."
