Cup hit against Rapid
Match of the century: Leoben in a state of emergency!
The time has come! "Giant slayer" DSV Leoben takes on Rapid in the Cup semi-final on Wednesday evening (20:45)! The stadium of the second division club has been completely sold out for weeks with 9000 spectators. A very special highlight match for goal monster Deni Alar, who wore the Vienna jersey for seven years.
A city in a state of emergency! The whole of Leoben is eagerly awaiting the Cup semi-final clash against Rapid, even the Donawitz blast furnaces next to the stadium seem to be smoking with tension.
With WSG Tirol, WAC and Altach, the second division team has already beaten three Bundesliga teams, and Rapid will also be the last stop on Wednesday evening. The club has proclaimed it the "match of the century" and the stadium will be bursting at the seams with around 9,000 fans today. Pure witches' cauldron! "Rapid is the clear favorite, but our goal is the final. We definitely want to get there," emphasizes Deni Alar ahead of the clash against his former club. He played 175 games for the Green-Whites and scored 50 goals - yet he looks back on his two Rapid eras with mixed feelings.
"Rapid era repressed"
"The first two years were great, after that I was often injured. I've already forgotten my second era at Rapid," winks the 34-year-old, whose goal tally this season is almost terrifying: 19 goals in just as many games! His second spring. Which he wants to garnish with the next sensation. "Rapid is in good shape again. But if we perform like we did in the cup games before, then something is possible against Rapid as underdogs," says the goal machine, who has gone goalless in his last two league games.
"We weren't good there, didn't show our true colors. Maybe I was saving the goals for Rapid," smiles Alar mischievously. The anticipation for the "match of the century" under the blast furnaces is also huge for the veteran, who has already experienced a number of big games in his long career. "Floodlit match, full stadium and great atmosphere. Sturm and Rapid have the best fans in Austria, but ours will certainly put up a good fight," emphasized the man from Zeltweg, who lifted the Cup with the Blacks in 2018. "The two years at Sturm were certainly the best.
