Expert tough: “Lewis is spoiled …”
Former Swiss racing driver Marc Surer has criticized Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. The Briton cannot handle bad cars, which is why team-mate George Russell is currently superior to him. However, the 39-year-old could be re-motivated by the upcoming change to Ferrari.
"Lewis has only ever driven the best cars. This means that if the car doesn't do what Lewis wants, then he has a problem," Surer lashes out at the seven-time world champion on Formula1.de. This is the Briton's greatest weakness, as can currently be seen.
This also distinguishes Hamilton from Fernando Alonso or Michael Schumacher, who were sometimes able to achieve victories in inferior cars: "These are people who can simply adapt to the car. Lewis can't do that. That's exactly his weakness."
Even in Formula 3 and Formula 2, Hamilton was always in the best car: "Maybe he's just spoiled. And when he has to fight with the car, he loses," says the expert. It is simply normal for the Briton that the car would behave the way he wants it to. However, this is currently not the case, which is why his team-mate is currently performing better.
Ferrari change as an opportunity
"If the car is not good, then Russell drives better, because he has had to struggle for years with this Williams, with a relatively poorly performing car," explains the 72-year-old. Nevertheless, he also had words of praise for Hamilton: "If the car is good, then he surpasses himself. That again is the ability to practically outclass the opposition. At the moment when the car is exactly how you want it to be."
The Swiss driver sees the switch to Ferrari as a positive step: "He will certainly be motivated again when he is in the Ferrari, because he naturally wants to prove to the world that he can win races with the Ferrari."
