During his visit to Paris on Thursday, Chancellor Karl Nehammer presented French President Emmanuel Macron with boxing gloves. A symbolic gift. In more ways than one.

They want to make Europe competitive again. Quick-witted in geopolitics. The visit of Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer to France's President Emmanuel Macron in Paris was all about this.

Hence the symbolic - in more ways than one - nature of the guest gift: boxing gloves weighing twelve ounces. These gloves are mainly used for training purposes - and at the Olympic boxing tournament.

Which was naturally a topic of discussion between the two amateur boxers. Before discussing the global political situation, the two heads of government had a lively discussion about their training and the upcoming Olympic Games. These will take place in Paris this summer. 45,000 police officers and 2,000 law enforcement officers from abroad will ensure increased security.

Austria is also making its contribution by sending police officers and police dogs, for which President Macron expressed his gratitude. "We generally work well together in the arms and security sector," said Macron, who emphasized that the French police are being equipped with Austrian Glock pistols and that Austria's army had just ordered more French Mistral missiles.

Nehammer and Macron "united in their goal"
Nehammer cited the Olympic Games as an example of bringing the issue of peace back into focus in view of the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. When it comes to Russia, the Chancellor and Macron "agree on the goal, the paths are different".

France's president relies more on the "deterrence scenario", while Nehammer is an advocate of the precautionary principle in order to "avoid stumbling into a major war".

They also agree on the goal of the Gaza war: "The terrorist organization Hamas must be destroyed and the Palestinian population must receive sufficient aid."

Both heads of government are of the opinion that Europe must become more competitive and independent. To this end, the economy should not be subject to such strict rules. According to the Chancellor, the view from outside is: "The USA is innovative, China is productive, Europe is regulatory."
