New heat record
Summer starts in April this year
April, April, the weather does what it wants. And this year it seems to want to be particularly warm. "After the warmest February and March in recorded history, April is also starting too warm. This year we already had spring in February, and summer starts in April," summarizes Josef Haslhofer, meteorologist at GeoSphere Austria.
April, April, the weather does what it wants. And this year it seems to want to be particularly warm. "After the warmest February and March in recorded history, April is also starting too warm. This year we already had spring in February, and summer starts in April," sums up weather expert Josef Haslhofer, meteorologist at GeoSphere Austria.
It's going to be really sunny today
Today, Friday, will be mostly sunny and temperatures will climb to between 18 and 24 degrees. At the weekend, we can expect plenty of sunshine and warm air thanks to a high pressure zone. "On Saturday, temperatures will be between 22 and 28 degrees, on Sunday it will be even warmer with 24 to 29 degrees. These are summer temperatures and very unusual for this time of year. This warm phase will stay with us until Tuesday, which is rare," says Haslhofer. Compared to the same day last year, the temperatures are twice as high this year.
I have to work, but I'm going to spend the rest of the day relaxing with my friends on the Donaulände in Linz.

Three years ago it was more than 20 degrees colder
On April 7, 2021, it was 4.7 degrees in Linz, more than 20 degrees colder than forecast for Sunday. And the record for the warmest start to April is also likely to fall. "The highest measured air temperature in the first ten days of April in Upper Austria comes from the measuring station in Linz, on April 9, 2018, when 27 degrees were measured. The highest temperature measured in Upper Austria in one April was 31.8 degrees on April 28, 2012 in Braunau/Ranshofen," says the weather researcher, who no longer expects it to get noticeably colder.
The record cold of minus 12.8 degrees from April 1, 1996 in St. Wolfgang will therefore continue. "According to the long-term average, temperatures should be between eleven and 16 degrees. We've been well above that for five days now," explains Haslhofer.
I'm already looking forward to the first really warm weekend and will be spending it on the golf course.

Outdoor pools remain closed
The early onset of summer has no impact on the outdoor pool season. "Preparations are underway," was the unanimous response to a Krone press release. From May 1st, however, it should be possible to splash around in Linz and Wels without any worries. However, the pool season is already starting this weekend for the most hardcore. Anyone who is already wondering how warm the summer will be will have to be patient: "You can't draw any conclusions about the summer from the current weather. That doesn't mean anything yet."
