50 years of the VW Golf
The first evolutionary stage: the Golf II
For 50 years, the Golf has shaped the streetscape in Europe and, of course, also in Austria. The incredible success story of the bestseller entered the next round in 1983 with the "2 Series Golf". We are celebrating together with VW - and you can win.
It was the second Golf with which the 1960s generation learned to drive. Its predecessor was already the favorite of all driving instructors and learner drivers. Following on seamlessly from 1983, the second generation of the legendary Golf finally and irrevocably entered the minds of the baby boomers. The memories were so intense that a novel by German author Florian Illies was later even named after the Golf II. And it was this Golf that democratized progress particularly strongly - with technologies such as the regulated catalytic converter, the anti-lock braking system and the first all-wheel drive in the series.
Unmistakable Golf DNA
However, part of the secret of the Golf's success is also the fact that the designers transferred the DNA of the first Golf to its successor, thus manifesting a Golf design culture for eternity. This DNA still makes every Golf unmistakable today. After 6.3 million units, the second generation of the Golf was discontinued in the summer of 1991.
