Filmmakers explore their relationship with their fathers
In their new short documentaries premiering at the Diagonale, two Styrian filmmakers explore their relationship with their fathers - but in very different ways.
What should you do as a daughter when you sense a certain alienation in your relationship with your father? Graz-based filmmaker Lisa Hasenhütl decided to accompany her father, a passionate inventor, with her camera. "Alongside his job, he always pursued unusual projects in the hope of being successful with one of them," she explains. As he prepares for a dragon boat race on the Mur, her daughter is there with the camera and repeatedly engages him in conversations about life and their relationship. Her hope: "I not only wanted to get closer to him, but also to arouse his interest in my work as a filmmaker," she explains. She talks about this in the 40-minute documentary "Of Dragons and Rabbits" in a humorous and clever way.
The father and the meat
The portrait of a father told by author Angelika Reitzer in her short documentary "abstechen" is of a somewhat different caliber. Her film about her father, who died four years ago, is primarily aimed at questioning our relationship with meat: "My father kept pigs all his life and also stabbed them himself. So he had a very different relationship with meat than we are used to today. I talked to him about this before he died," Reitzer tells the Krone.
Because her own family no longer had any pictures, Reitzer took a Super 8 camera to a farmer in southern Styria. "I also wanted to use the images to question what awareness we still have of the origin of the meat we consume and, in general, how much death is still integrated into our lives." The result is a 15-minute, very personal film essay.
Both films will celebrate their world premiere on Saturday (Annenhof Kino, 9 pm) at the Diagonale in Graz and can be seen there again on Monday (Schubert Kino, 11 am).
