Ukraine has reportedly destroyed half a dozen fighter jets on the ground in a drone attack on the Morozovsk military airfield in the Rostov region in southern Russia. Soldiers were also killed or injured in the attack on Friday night.

"At least six Russian Federation fighter jets were destroyed and a further eight damaged," reported several Ukrainian media outlets on Friday, citing informants in security circles.

Eight further aircraft were damaged
In addition, at least 20 Russian soldiers were either killed or injured. The attack was carried out by the Ukrainian secret service SBU and the military. Eight other aircraft were damaged, an insider told Reuters news agency. There was initially no independent confirmation of this. The military airfield is located a good 270 kilometers from the front line.

The governor of the Rostov region, Vasily Golubev, had previously reported a "massive drone attack". According to the Russian side, more than 40 drones had been shot down by their own air defense in Rostov. A transformer station and a high-voltage power line were damaged.

According to an agency report, the Russian air defense intercepted 53 Ukrainian drones during the night. Most of them were aimed at the Rostov region, the news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense. One drone was shot down in the Saratov region, where strategic fighter jets are stationed at an airbase.

Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian war of aggression for more than two years. Ukraine is dependent on Western help to defend its territory.
