In the third round of the qualifying group, Blau-Weiß Linz and WAC are aiming for their first win today. While the Upper Austrians have been winless in the Bundesliga for ten matches, the Carinthians have been without a win for four games. For Gerald Scheiblehner's side, the aim is to extend the five-point gap to bottom club Lustenau, with Manfred Schmid's team one point behind leaders Austria Vienna.
Focus on offense
The promoted side from Linz have scored just one goal in their last five games, and last week they were held to a goalless draw at Austria Vienna despite being outnumbered for almost 80 minutes. "The focus in training this week was on finishing goals. We obviously have problems there, you don't have to be a great expert to recognize that. We create a lot of chances, but we don't convert them," explained Scheiblehner.
After two draws in a row, the coach is hoping for a better result. "We've already shown that we can beat the WAC. I wouldn't be satisfied with a point, we want to win the game," emphasized Scheiblehner. Wolfsburg won the first encounter 2:1 in July and Linz won 2:0 in October.
Schmid: "The game won't be a walkover"
This is another reason why WAC coach Manfred Schmid has a lot of respect for his opponents. "The game won't be a walkover. They should have won against Austria last week. I have a lot of respect for the team, even if the results haven't been good recently. We have to play with 100 percent," said the Viennese.
Schmid was not really satisfied with his team's recent performances. "We want to present ourselves better than in the last few games." His team needs to be more determined, more courageous and better in the final third. In the first two games in the qualifying group against WSG Tirol (1:1) and Altach (0:0), the Lavanttaler drew.
Schmid's goal is to take home something worthwhile from Linz. "Preferably three points. We've had the chance to win every game since the division and haven't taken it. But we've still always scored points, which also says something about our quality," he explained. In all likelihood, he will have to do without Florian Rieder, while top scorer Augustine Boakye is also injured and therefore questionable.
