Interrogations continue

New, even worse suspicion in the Danka case

Early on, the two men now in custody were considered highly suspected of having killed the little girl. With the help of telephone surveillance, the two Serbs were finally convicted by the criminal investigation department. Only an autopsy can clarify what was actually done to the child - the officers fear that the two detainees may not have told the whole truth.

The interrogations go on and on with the two men who confessed to the crime against little Danka on Thursday night.

They continue to give different accounts of the crime. Only in certain areas of responsibility do the two waterworks workers stick to the same versions.

Several stops at dumping grounds
On March 26, the 22-month-old girl would have run into their car - a Fiat Panda, their company vehicle - on a country road in the Serbian municipality of Bor, where they would have been driving at excessive speed - and drunk.

One of the perpetrators claims that the child died immediately after the collision. The other, on the other hand, explained that the little girl had screamed loudly in pain: "That's why we had to mute her, strangle her."

Traces of the victim's blood on the back seat of the Fiat prove that Danka must have been lying there. It is also certain, based on a data analysis of the car's GPS system, that the two 50-year-olds made a stop at a garbage dump a few minutes after the alleged accident.

Where they drove to again on March 27 - "in order," as they both now admit, "to dig up the small body and then take it to a larger garbage dump".

This statement is probably true, but not the one about the course of the collision - as lie detector tests seem to prove. The CID therefore assumes that there could still be twists and turns in the case.

As reported, Danka disappeared from the garden of his family's weekend home on Tuesday last week. The police then used data from traffic surveillance cameras to investigate all vehicles that had been in the area at the time. And then checked their drivers and passengers.

In the end, 17 of them were deemed suspicious by the officers, including the two people now in custody.

"Haha, the police are really totally stupid"
Because they had already attracted attention for various drunken arguments - and because they took part in searches for Danka and were almost too eager to do so.

One thing is certain: The cell phones of the two - like those of 15 other "suspicious persons" - had already been tapped since April 30. And when the Austrian authorities released a video on Wednesday that had been filmed in Vienna of two women and a girl who looked very similar to Danka; a video in which even the parents of the missing child claimed to have recognized their daughter - the perpetrators were relieved.

And they talked to each other on the phone: "Haha, the police are really stupid and on the wrong track. That's why nothing can happen to us now."

But they were wrong: the police overheard the conversation and soon afterwards the two men were arrested.

Much worse details feared
They did not reveal where exactly they had dumped their victim's body. The suspected reason for this concealment: an autopsy of the dead girl could reveal much worse details of the crime than previously known ...
