Stuntwoman and dancer
From the chicken coop in Eden to the opera in Sydney
As a stuntwoman, she hangs 20 meters in the air on a chandelier, impresses as a flying artist in theaters around the world and easily lifts her 92-kg boyfriend onto her shoulders. Christina Zauner returned from Sydney to Upper Austria for a show in Bad Ischl. And explains why she'd better not have a fainting fit.
It's an unusual sight for Mr. Dragan as he serves his guests a cappuccino in the coffee house in Bad Ischl. After all, it's not exactly everyday that the woman "takes a seat" on his head instead of on the armchair next to her lover. But the waiter is professional enough not to fall into a state of unrestrained amazement. Our eyes go wide, but for Christina Zauner and her boyfriend Sam, the "feat" is completely normal. Zauner is a flying artist with the Australian circus company "CIRCA" and travels all over the world with her colleagues.
She likes to take her boyfriend on her shoulders
After the caffeinated refreshment, it's time to get out on the road. After all, training must not be neglected during the appointment with the "Krone". Zauner lifts the 92-kilo man onto her shoulders, she herself performs unimaginable contortions on a lamp post - and has fun doing it. Just like yesterday, when the two of them were on stage at the world premiere of "Urlicht - Primal Light" in the imperial city. "Until recently, we danced in "Orpheus and Eurydice" at the Sydney Opera House, then spent five weeks on a cruise ship and have now come here straight from Brisbane," says the 29-year-old. Whose whole life is spent in the limelight.
As an aerial artist with an ensemble in Brisbane
"I've been dancing since I was four, I was on stage for the first time at the age of six and, as a dancer and acrobat, I now joined the ensemble in Australia as an aerial artist. I grew up in Schlierbach, but went to boarding school in Vienna when I was twelve." Zauner met her partner and boyfriend in Leipzig at the Kristall Palast Varieté. "That was my first job as an artist there. I learned a lot from him. Sam is a whiplash artist. He flies seven meters into the air and lands on a 45-centimeter board," the Innviertel native explains to us as a matter of course. It is just as natural for her to hang 20 meters in the air unsecured without a net. "Yes, I only have my rope, no net. So I shouldn't get a weakness attack," says Zauner with a wink.
And in between, she does a few stretching exercises on a pedestrian bridge in the center of Bad Ischl. Starting next week, the 29-year-old can be seen hanging on a chandelier as a stunt double at the Vienna State Opera. Much more challenging than her performance at the Helene Fischer show in 2017: "That was cool. Helene is really nice and very professional."
"My whole life is in my suitcase"
Zauner only rarely returns to her home in Diersbach. "I always try to make it home when I'm in Europe, but it's often only 24 hours. But my main place of residence is Vienna, even though I was last there last year. We travel all over the world and always with 23 kilos. That's what an airline allows as luggage. My whole life is in there - clothes for four seasons. You can see how little you need. It's actually quite nice."
Very revealing photos on social media
The way she describes her own body. Because you keep seeing extremely revealing photos on social media. "We work with our bodies every day, feel the bare skin. Basically, I have a good relationship with my body. Because for me, showing it is the most normal thing in the world," says Zauner.
She has also designed underwear. Perhaps the second mainstay after her career? "Perhaps. I'll be 30 next year and I'm currently fitter than ever. But this is definitely a job with an expiration date. But after that, I'd like to produce shows myself, to be backstage. And I want to bring this circus to Austria. That's extraordinary." Just as Christina's whole life is somehow extraordinary. Motto: From the chicken coop in Eden - a district of Diersbach - to the opera in Sydney.
