Salzburg wins first final game against the KAC
The defending champions have started the final series of the ICE Hockey League with an away win! Red Bull Salzburg won game 1 of the "Best Of Seven" series in Klagenfurt against the KAC with 1:0 after overtime on Friday. Paul Huber was the match-winner with his goal in the 65th minute. The second game is on Sunday (17:30) in Salzburg.
The duel between the best team in the basic round and the defending champions was characterized by measured risk, consistent defensive work and strong goalkeepers on both sides. According to Puls24, it was the second time in league history that no goals were scored in regulation time. Huber scored the winner in extra time. "Pure emotion, I'm super happy," said the scorer of the winning goal in the Puls24 interview.
KAC mostly the dominant team
The KAC, without the injured captain Thomas Hundertpfund, immediately got into the game well after a good week's break and were usually the dominant team. However, Salzburg had the first big chance after the Carinthians lost the glass, but Mario Huber was unable to beat goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm. After that, Klagenfurt did not concede anything in the first period and had three good chances, the best of which came from Lukas Haudum, who hit the crossbar after a counterattack while short-handed (18').
After a goalless middle period, Salzburg's penalty-killing was in demand in the third period. After a low check on Matt Fraser, Ryan Murphy was handed a five-minute plus game-misconduct penalty, but Salzburg's shorthanded play worked excellently. Florian Baltram even had the chance to give the visitors the lead on the counter-attack (53').
The result:
KAC - Red Bull Salzburg 0:1 n.V. (0:0, 0:0, 0:0, 0:1)
Standings in the "Best Of Seven" series: 0:1
2nd game on Sunday (5.30 pm) in Salzburg
